This is one of those steps that most homeowners never see - but it's one of the most important ones we do. We're deep into a bathroom remodel in Saline, and right now we're focused on getting the waterproofing layer, the shower pan, and the banding all done correctly before anything else moves forward.

Here's why this matters. Water is patient. It will find every gap, every poorly sealed seam, and every shortcut that was taken. And when it does, you're not just dealing with a wet floor - you're dealing with rotted framing, mold inside your walls, and a repair bill that dwarfs what the original job would have cost to do right. We don't skip steps here.

The substrate you see wrapping the walls and the built-in bench is a cement-based tile backer designed specifically for wet areas. It won't swell, it won't deteriorate, and it gives the tile something solid and stable to bond to for the long haul. The bench framing is clean and squared up, and the pan area is prepped and ready for the next phase.

Every seam, every corner, and every fastener point gets treated as a potential water entry point. That's the mindset that separates a shower that holds up for decades from one that starts causing problems in a few years. We take that seriously on every job, whether it's a straightforward swap or a full gut-and-rebuild like this one.

We're looking forward to sharing the finished space once we get there. There's a lot of great work still to come on this one.
